Day 1: Skinny Avatar, Who Is Your Best Client

Week 1: Building Your Brand And Creating Awareness

The foundation of every successful endeavor is clarity. Clarity about who you are serving, clarity about what they want, and clarity about how you can be the bridge between where they are now and where they want to be.

Objective: identify and define your ideal client, your "Skinny Avatar", so you can aim your effort at the right person.

What to write down

Demographics

  • Age range
  • Gender
  • Location: city, state, region
  • Occupation
  • Typical income range

Psychographics

  • Interests, hobbies and passions
  • Values and beliefs
  • Lifestyle
  • Main challenges and pain points
  • Short-term and long-term goals

Behaviour

  • How they make buying decisions: impulse, needs reviews, and so on
  • Whether they prefer to buy online or in person
  • Whether they are loyal to specific brands or open to new ones
  • Which platforms they actually use

Build the persona

Combine all of it into one named person with a backstory, so they stop being a category. For example:

  • Name: Sarah
  • Age: 35
  • Location: San Francisco, CA
  • Occupation: Marketing Manager
  • Interests: Yoga, reading, hiking
  • Values: Environmental sustainability, work-life balance
  • Challenges: Balancing work and personal life, finding time for self-care
  • Goals: Reach a leadership position, stay healthy
  • Buying behaviour: Researches thoroughly before purchasing
  • Platforms: Active on Instagram and LinkedIn

Then share it with a colleague or mentor, adjust it on their feedback, and test it in your actual outreach.

Seven steps to get there

1. Revisit your current network. Starting from scratch is daunting. List everyone you have worked with in the past year and highlight the ones who match your ideal client. Schedule catch-ups, even a quick coffee. Then analyse the one deal that felt effortless: why did it work? Trust built over time, a shared vision, mutual benefit? That is what you are looking for more of.

2. Identify their behaviour. To meet people you need to know where they already are. Spend an hour in industry forums, LinkedIn groups and niche platforms. Join conversations, ask questions, offer something without expecting anything back. Track which places produce real discussion.

3. Understand their goals. Draft questions that uncover what someone is actually trying to achieve. Host a session or a Q&A and ask them. It is not only about the numbers: some people are after social impact, some after a legacy, some after a particular kind of project.

4. Navigate their concerns. Addressing concerns up front builds trust. Run a feedback session on what is worrying people, and respond to what they tell you rather than to what you assumed.

5. Decipher their decision-making. Find out how they research, who they trust and how they vet. Then adapt how you present. Most people value their time, so a short, clear case usually beats a long presentation. Time yourself: can you explain your value in under five minutes?

6. Visualise the partnership. Spend thirty minutes picturing your ideal client meeting, the conversation, the shared aim. Use that to direct where you spend your networking time. Look for shared interests beyond the work too.

7. Zone in on their needs. List what they might need beyond the obvious: introductions, insight, mentorship in a specific area. Design what you offer around those.

Today is not only about understanding. It is about building connections and establishing trust. Your greatest asset is not just what you know, it is the relationships you build.
